BRSCC National Rounds 1,2 & 3 Brands Hatch
11th April 2017
A great weekend at Brands Hatch, such an amazing circuit! Unfortunately not the result we wanted, it was always going to be a bit of a challenge for me, I hadn't driven a race car in 5 months, my first time to the track, first time in a Spectrum chassis and only my second race in cars. Going into the weekend, I really had no idea what to expect or where to aim for, but it became clear at the end of just one days testing that top 10 finishes were in the cards.
Qualifying: Kevin and the team made sure we were positioned well leaving the pits, and we were until someone in front of us couldn't start, promoting a load of slower cars to go out ahead. This led to most my session passing traffic and failing to get a clean lap or toe from any of the faster drivers. P13 out of 30 was the best I could do.
Race 1: I got a great start and passed two people round the outside into the first corner, but the session was red flagged and I had to return to 13th. Second start wasn't as good, slower off and nearly ending the session early after getting tangled in an incident. Fell down the order but worked my way back to 13th.
Race 2: A decent start, but I had to drive off the track to avoid someone else's incident at turn 2. I lost a load of time again, but finished P11.
Race 3: Had a really decent start, made up some places and was momentarily in P7 until I was launched into the air by another driver. I managed to keep it going and was desperate to continue, but the car had sustained too much damage and that was the end of my weekend.
A huge learning curve for me, many positives to take away. Kevin, Alex, Ally and Shirley did an amazing job, they taught me a huge amount over the weekend and I'm really looking forward to running with them this season. The car setup was great and I was really happy with the Spectrum chassis performance. I need more time in the car to find the last half a second we need to put it on the front row, which I suppose was to be expected really. Mostly gutted about the last race as it was the first opportunity I had all weekend to show what I could do and have a solid finish, our pace would have put us top 5 in that race.
Anyway, I look forward to the next round. I'm out testing at Combe Thursday with the team, should be good!
Just want to say a massive thank you to Kevin, Alex, Alastair and Shirlfor all the help, hospitality and support this weekend.
My Mum and Dad for coming and watching, was really great to have you both there.
Jim and Sandra Robertson for all the support, gutted you couldn't be here this weekend, but you'll be back soon.
All my friends and family, I had many messages of support over the weekend, it's hugely appreciated!
On a side note my first weekend racing with my Walero, it was a hot weekend, but they were extremely comfortable and kept me cool throughout, I highly recommend you check them out!
On to the next one!
